, meaning that it looks the same when reversed. It is also the 17th tetrahedral number, meaning that if you pile up spheres so that successive layers form the triangular numbers 1, 3, 6, 10, and so on, by layer 17 the total number of balls will be 969. Does 17 have any other significance? Well, the 17th triangular number 1 + 2 + ⋯ + 17 is 153. According to John 21:11 precisely that number of fish were caught in an unbroken net. And so on. The Bible contains so many numbers that such games can be played indefinitely; the question is what conclusions (if any) should be drawn from them.

The earliest known systematic cult based on the rule of numbers was that of the Pythagoreans . Pythagoras was a Greek who thrived in the 6th century bce . Little is known of his life, and in fact he may be a composite figure to whom the discoveries of many different people have been attributed by his followers. It is not even known whether the Pythagorean theorem in geometry was actually discovered by him.

The Pythagoreans invested specific numbers with mystical properties. SKECHERS Work Blais Sale Store Buy Cheap Order DkaZKsn
symbolized unity and the origin of all things, since all other numbers can be created from 1 by adding enough copies of it. For example, 7 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1. The number 2 was symbolic of the female principle, 3 of the male; they come together in 2 + 3 = 5 as marriage. All even numbers were female, all odd numbers male. The number 4 represented justice . The most perfect number was , because 10 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4. This number symbolized unity arising from multiplicity. Moreover, it was related to space. A single point corresponds to 1, a line to 2 (because a line has two extremities), a triangle to 3, and space to 4. Thus 10 also symbolized all possible spaces.

The Pythagoreans recognized the existence of nine heavenly bodies: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and the so-called Central Fire. So important was the number 10 in their view of cosmology that they believed there was a tenth body, Counter-Earth, perpetually hidden from us by the Sun.

Some Pythagorean speculations were mathematical. They represented numbers by arrangements of dots. The square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16,…) were arranged in squares, and the triangular numbers (1, 3, 6, 10,…) were arranged in triangles ( see figure ). This terminology remains in use to the present day.

The Pythagoreans were especially fascinated by the presence of numbers in the natural world. Perhaps their most spectacular discovery was that musical harmony is related to simple whole-number ratios. A string (such as that on a violin) produces a note with a particular pitch ; a string one-half as long produces an extremely harmonious note to the first, now called the octave. A string two-thirds as long produces the next most harmonious note, now called the fifth. And one three-fourths as long produces the fourth, also very harmonious. The Pythagoreans discovered these facts empirically by experimenting with strings of different lengths. Today these harmonies are traced to the physics of vibrating strings, which move in patterns of waves. The number of waves that can fit into a given length of string is a whole number, and these whole numbers determine the simple numerical ratios. When the numbers do not form a simple ratio, the corresponding notes interfere with each other and form discordant “beats” that are unpleasant to the ear. The full story is more complex, involving what the brain becomes accustomed to, but there is a definite rationale behind the Pythagorean discovery. This later led the German astronomer Johannes Kepler to the concept of the “music of the spheres,” a kind of heavenly harmony in which the planets effectively produced tunes as they moved across the heavens. Some of Kepler’s theories about the planets, such as the elliptical shape of their orbits, became solid science—but not this one. Nonetheless, it was influential in establishing the view that there is some kind of order in the cosmos, an idea that culminated in Isaac Newton ’s law of gravity .

Navigation Menu is a theme feature introduced with Version 3.0 . WordPress includes an easy to use mechanism for introducing customised navigation menus into a theme. In order to incorporate menu support into your theme, you need to add a few code segments to your theme files.

First, in your theme's functions.php, you need to write a function to register the names of your menus. (This is how they will appear in the Appearance -> Menus admin screen.) As an example, this menu would appear in the "Theme Locations" box as "Header Menu".

And this would make two menu options appear, header menu and extra menu -

Once you've done that, your theme will be almost ready. The last preparation step is to tell the theme where you want the menus to show up. You do this in the relevant theme file. So, for example, we might want our header menu to be in header.php. So open up that file in the theme editor, and decide where you want to put your menu. The code to use here is wp_nav_menu which we will need once for each menu location. So, add this code -

All you need to ensure is that the theme_location points to the name you provided for your menu in the functions.php code above. (Note that it's the header-menu being used here rather than Header Menu without a hyphen. Header-menu is the name that the code understands, Header Menu is the human-readable version that you see in the admin page.)

To complete the code, you can put your extra menu someplace else. Maybe you want a menu on one of your pages, for example, and you might even want it to be jazzed up a little with a containing DIV of a certain class -

So you'd put the above into your Page template, and not only would the menu show up wherever you put it, it'd be styled as my_extra_menu_class so that you can work with that in .

That's all the background work. To finish, you would simply visit the Appearance -> Menus panel in your site admin. Now, instead of seeing some text suggesting that your theme doesn't natively support menus, you'll see some Theme Location options.

You can now use the GUI menu creator on this admin panel to put your menu(s) together. Give them each a name, and then assign a menu to a location with the pull-down options.

The has agreed to pay $4 million to settle a lawsuit by the families of a Marysville man and his girlfriend who were killed in 2011 by a group of renegade soldiers -- led by another Washington man -- intent on overthrowing the government and starting a race war.

The unusual settlement, reached after months of mediation, includes $1.7 million for the family of Michael Roark, a former Marysville soldier who became entangled with the group of extremists soldiers while stationed at Fort Stewart , Georgia.

Roark was killed by the group of soldiers -- along with his 17-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany York -- because the extremist soldiers worried they couldn't trust him.

The killings were ordered by the leader of the group, Army Pvt. Isaac Aguigui, of Chelan.

Aguigui is serving life without parole for the murder of his pregnant wife, an Army sergeant whom he strangled. He then used the $500,000 the military gave him in death benefits to finance plans that included poisoning Washington's apple crop, bombing a public park in Savannah, Georgia, and assassinating then-President Barack Obama.

The settlement is striking because the Army had already succeeded in having the claims filed by Roark's parents -- Tracy Jahr, of Marysville, and Brett Roark, of Daytona Beach, Florida -- dismissed in 2016. U.S. District Court Judge Barbara Rothstein said she had no choice but to comply with a doctrine that prevents the military from being sued for injuries arising from military service.

However, in allowing the York case to trial, Rothstein said the jury in that case would be told that both the Army and the FBI knew Aguigui posed a "substantial risk" to the public at least two months before Roark and York were killed, but did nothing.

The York case in U.S. District Court in Seattle relied on claims filed by York's parents. Meantime, Roark's parents had appealed Rothstein's dismissal to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals when the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C., agreed to take both cases into mediation, said Brian Brook, the New York attorney representing the two families.

That was last June. The case settled earlier this month.

"At the end of the day, the government agreed to pay the Roark parents $1.7 million -- for a dismissed case," Brook said. "If you can find a precedent for that, I'd be interested to know about it."

Tiffany York's parents, Timothy York, of Kerman, California, and Brenda Thomas, of Richmond Hill, Georgia, will receive $2.3 million for their daughter's death.

The Army, in a pair of settlement stipulations, admitted no liability or blame. The Army did not respond to a request for comment.
